The type of music we listen to can often reveal a little bit about who we are. But it can also cause us to cross cultural divides and release a sense of peace that we would otherwise not have been privy to.

For me, listening to the music of the Idan Raichel project ( an Israeli cross-cultural collaboration), Fiorella Mannoia (an Italian pop singer) and Greeeen (a Japanese pop rock/ hip hop/ breakbeat vocal group) have been awe inspiring.

One of the most beautiful things about music is that it’s not only about the lyrics, because everything else is also infused with meaning. Be it the guitar, the piano, the trombone or the oboe.

Do you believe me?

Try listening to someone you normally wouldn’t. Say a punk/ rock band. Or an international group that speaks a different language.

If we expose ourselves to different types of music, books, movies or animation, little by little our world view will expand, and we will find ourselves changing. And although the change might seem insignificant at first: opening a door for someone older, offering a smile to someone who is sick or troubled, communicating with people who live abroad. Over time, however, these small acts will add up to something greater. Eventually we will become a catalyst for change!

I’m not sure if it was after reading Tall Tales from the Mekong Delta, but stories with tall tales can be alarming…try it for yourself. Look it up for yourself, find yourself a copy and prepare to be eerily impressed. (And don’t say I didn’t warn you!)

Me, Tarzan. You, Jane. Or maybe it’s the other way around, anyhow today is just one of those days. You are deep in the Amazon Rain Forest and a big, bad, hairy predator is out to get you. What are you going to do?

Writing Prompt # 91

Sometimes there’s this one song that keeps playing on and on in your head. And sometimes it’s the things that it causes you to remember, more than anythings else to be stuck in that almost nostalgic state of regret that fuels everything else.

Or whether it’s fear, and angst or something else entirely, the song, Some Nights by the pop group Fun, is one of those things that’s been on constant replay in my head. Here I supply the shots, you, your mind the music and let the Muse take you away.

W.P. # 91    These are the friends I had.

Writing Prompt # 90

It’s not always about where you’ll end up, but sometimes it’s about how you begin. In the process of writing it’s about how you think, and feel, and see. Not to mention touch and taste. Yes, everything begins, now. Right here. With you, you see, you’re on an island.

W.P. # 90.    Write about an island.
